What the heck is wrong with my ankle?!

Question: Two days ago, I was jumping on the trampoline (like an idiot) and I landed on my ankle wrong. Me and my friend both heard a noise (I think it was a pop) and I'm down on my back. After holding on to it for about 30 seconds, I get my friend to help me off the trampoline and its already insanely swollen but the pain is bearable and I (again like an idiot) decide to walk on it...And then It gives way and I fall again(again with a noise). Basically the swelling gets worse, but the pain is mostly bearable but I can't walk on it. Two days later, after getting a plaster splint and pain killers, My foot is turning purple in places that it wasn't hurt (right below my toes, my lower calf, on the inside of my foot at the bottom). I have been elevating, taking NSAID's, compressing, and putting ice on it. What is going on here? It really looks broken (according to the people at the ER that looked at it) and I cant walk on it, but whats going on with the bruising everywhere?

Wow sorry to read about your accident. Of course a doctor is the person to get the best answer! I would guess that you have at least a sprain and possibly a break. In either case you have to give it time to heal. the pain is bearable because the tendons that are torn don't have too many nerves that transmit pain. Be that as it may, you can consider a sprain to be as serious as a cut. If you have a cut and continue to use what ever was cut, you will have a large scar and that will inhibit your future flexibility. Scar tissue can also cause irritation and pain.

Don't judge your recovery by how painful it is. You will regret it if you produce a permanent ache in your foot by aggravating the injury. Another possibility is a crack in the area of your lower leg that is growing. If you don't let it heat completely, one leg could be shorter than the other.

Bruising is simply where blood is flowing as a result of broken blood vessels. It flows away from the injury between the tissues where ever it can flow. So, obviously you have a severe injury and should be careful with it. If it doesn't heal properly you could even require an operation.

;-D Get some good books to read! Take it easy. Take a look at the links and you can get an idea of how serious it is.

it may be broke, but it could also be a sprain. i know it's redundant but RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate) the problem area. it also isn't that bad of an idea to go get it check out at a hospital or clinic.

If you can, go to your regular Dr. asap-if not, and probably best, go back to the emergency room, get it x rayed, and see what is going on now.
Take care.

it hurts.
