Do you understand hippa, especially as used in Dr's office?!

Question: I am not in the medical profession. As I understand, the hippa regulations prevent doctors, hospitals, or their employees from releasing your medical information to anyone except your insurance carrier. For example, if your doctor (or anyone in his office) knows your neighbor, he cannot say, "Ol' Mary was in last week for another V.D. episode." It is just an extension of the doctor-patient confidentiality statute.

I don't know why it is such a big deal in the doctors' offices or hospitals, as they should not be "talking out of school" anyway.
