Before and after health insurance?!

Question: Were you treated diffrently without it, compared to the way you were treated after you got it.

Answers: Were you treated diffrently without it, compared to the way you were treated after you got it.

I can't answer the "before I had health insurance' part but I can answer the question "Are you treated differently when the health care provider doesn't think you have health insurance?".

I know the answer to this question because my insurer, United Healthcare, botches my wife's claims so often that I get to experience the 'other side'.

The big difference is that medical services are much, much more expensive when you do not have health insurance. The amount that an insurance company pays will typically be about 1/3 what a health care provider will charge someone who is uninsured for the same procedure.

While this seems counter intuitive and a bit cruel the health care providers are forced to knuckle under to the insurance companies as part of a services contract. Also, lots of people who are uninsured end up not paying because they just can't afford to. So, those uninsured who can afford to pay are charged lots extra.
