Pills? Help Please!?!

Question: I have an inner and outer ear infection in both ears and I need to take pills, I can't break them in half and it's very hard for me to take them. Do you know of any other ways? (You can't chew them either)

Many pills that can't be broken or crushed have a time-release mechanism that allows the pill to distribute medicine to you at a controlled rate. If you crush, split, break or otherwise damage the pill in anyway, you risk destroying that time-release mechanism and getting too much medicine at one time. I would advise against splitting your medicine or taking it with food unless you first ask your pharmacist who knows the specifics of your medication.

There are special cups that you can buy at the pharmacy that make taking pills much easier. Basically, they have a pocket for the pills built into the cup and when you take a drink of water, you will swallow the pills with little effort.

If you are unable to find these or are unwilling to try, most all antibiotics are available in suspension (liquid) form. Ear infections are the most common infections in pediatrics so it is important to the practice of medicine that these drugs be available for easy administration to children. If you are unable to swallow pills, contact your doctor's office and request the same medication in liquid form. Most likely it will be available.

I believe the drug store sells pill cutters to make that easier. You might want to talk to the pharmacist.

Grind them between two spoons and blend into a small amount of honey/jam anything like that.

The pharmacist will be happy to cut them for you. I used to work in pharmacy and we would do this a lot for elderly people who can't do it themselves.

try putting it in a small cup of juice and letting it break itself down and then just drink the juice!! also works well with pudding

You have to relax first because the more freaked out the more you're going to struggle. I have a very strong gag reflex and it took some practice for me to be able to take pills. You might get a box of tic tacs for practice. Take a deep breath and then put the pill on the very back of your tongue and drink water or whatever you're taking it with in large gulps. The pill will go down with the gulps of water.

my daughter says it helps to take them with soda pop because it helps them float down........i don't know if this is just an excuse to get soda but you could try...
applesauce or pudding?

The two suggestions given are good. if you are unable to do either of those you might want to call your doctor and let them know that you are having difficulty swallowing because of the pills size.

You could always go to the drug store and buy a pill splitter...they don't cost much at all and they will cut the pill in half for you....
Have you tried putting them in yogurt and/or applesauce? Sometimes this will help the person swallow them more easily...
Or you could just take a knife and press down to split them in half...
Good luck...and I hope you feel better....

Well when I went to camp and I couldn't swallow pills and had a headache the leaders didn't know what to do. They quickly came up with a solution though that I think might work for you. Put the pill in jello and swallow that instead. And plus if done this way... you wont have to taste the icky pill.

P.s. You shouldnt do this unless you can have food with your medication.

Put them in applesuce and swallow them that way. For some reason this helps swallowing. I used to do that for my grandmother (she had parkinsons disease & couldn't swallow very well) and she had no problems.
