My thumb is still sensitive from an injury 3 years ago?!

Question: About 3 years ago I slipped with a knife and cut myself. It was a large laceration across my thumb that cut almost to the bone, and I had to have stitches. It took 6 stitches and about 4 weeks of waiting for it to heal. Three years later though, the area is still numb and if pressure is applied on the right spot its very painful. Could the nerves have been damaged and it will be like this for the rest of my life, or is this abnormal? Any ideas?

HI there,
Yes the nerves will more than likely have been damaged, If they have only been bruised (twanged or knocked) then the sensation could come back some years later, but if you have cut right through a nerve , then you may be left with a numb patch or tingly sensations. To encourage feeling, rub it, and lightly scratch it and get used to using it and touching it.. Hope you get the feeling back..

No idea what the problem is. Your automatic healing system is at best 75-90 % effective so incomplete healing is normal. If you do not do something effective about the injury that's the way it's going to be for the rest of your life if it does not get worse.
Old injuries are harder to heal than fresh ones so if you want to fix that problem it's going to be a major hassle. The information require to fix it is posted here http://www.helium.com/tm/148271
