My heart pounds really fast when I lay down to go to sleep...I'm often stres!

Question: I've been pretty stressed out these days, just because my schedule has been so hectic. I'm a full time student, and i stay active and busy....I'm a perfectionist, and I work too hard (my family says so)... I also drink caffeine throughout the day, about 1 cup of coffee and 2 cups of tea. i never drink any a couple hours before bed though!! i find it hrd to wind down at night, and i find that my heart beats so fast...its hard to slow it down!!! This never happened to me before, should I be worried.? What are some things i can do to help this...or to SLOW DOWN! THANKS! =)

Hey...I had the same problem it's due having anxiety or a panic attack...just try not to worry about it...You're not going to die or anything..just try and relax maybe take a warm shower and watch a bit of tv..or play some calming music.....you're probably just going through a hectic phase right now like you said...don't worry about your health or anything that's what I did and it only made the anxiety worse......you're perfectly fine...but try and substitute the caffeine for water...Anyways, Good Luck

Oh yeah...I was told by my doctor to count upto a hundred by 7....and once you reach a hundred minus it by 7...worked for me when my heart would race....lol

P.S: You can always make an appointment with your doctor if you're unsure......that's what i did :)

Stop drinking caffine. Go see a doc if your heart rate is over 150 beats a minute. possibly a condition known as psvt. Just a thought. good luck.

Practice deep breathing when you lay down or at any other time. Breath in counting to 6-8, breath out counting 6-8. Continue this until you feel like your heart is slowed down. Try emptying your mind as you do this and just concentrate on your breathing. You can do this any time.

Have no caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, tea or aged cheese after 3 pm. If you are getting 8 or so hours of sleep you should be ok. Take your pulse to see if it is regular and about 80. (Meaning for 60 seconds the beats are equidistant and even from each other.) Stress can increase your heart rate as you know, as can anemia, dehydration, and the above mentioned things like caffeine and alcohol. If you are underweight or on a diet, that can also increase your heart rate, If you are a perfectionist, you need to realize that nothing in life is perfect-not even YOU-as you found out by your rapid heartrate meaning it is not right

Wow... you don't specify your age, but I'm guessing that you might be around your twenties... Anyways, I had that problem (at the present time is under control), and because of that I was hospitalized twice; results: I have an arrythmia. The first thing doctor took away from my diet: caffeine, which is the cause for the fast beat of the heart. Also, watch the sodium. My recommendation: Go to your primary physician as soon as possible, please. It is not good for your entire health to continue with this problem. Avoid all caffeine in your diet (coffee, chocolate, sodas) Good Luck

First of all go see your doctor, it's never good to rely on the internet for anything health related. Secondly it's important to understand that it is not good to rely on caffeine for energy, the human body does not require it (so I heard). Thirdly, I also consider myself somewhat of a perfectionist, but I do not let the need for perfection put me in a place that send my stress levels through the roof! Perhaps a break from your life would help remedy this but as I said earlier GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!
