Indigestion/Acid reflux?!

Question: I am 20 years old, and for the past year, I have had absolutely horrible indigestion. It started out well over a year ago just being the normal things (spicy food, chocolate, coffee, etc), and last year slowly progressed to being triggered by much more. It got to the point a couple months ago that it was so bad I couldn't eat or drink anything (other than milk) without getting indigestion.

I took Prilosec OTC for a while, and it worked great up until about a month ago. I've taken everything for this and nothing's worked.

I saw my doc in Jan. and she prescribed Prevacid. I missed one today (first one I've missed) and not even 10 hrs later I have HORRIBLE indigestion. I took the pill and all but it won't kick in for a little bit.

My doctor says it's not an ulcer or my gall bladder, that it's only minor acid reflux.

Is there any other explanation for this??? I'm calling tomorrow to make another appt but I wonder if maybe it's more than just acid reflux?

Any help is appreciated.

If you're having pain just from skipping one day there might be an underlying condition your doctor isn't seeing. Are you seeing a GI doctor or just a regular family doctor? It's best to see a GI for this problem and if you are I would get a second opinion from a different GI doctor.. It could be anything from ulcer, gallbladder, pancreatitis, acid reflux, a hiatal hernia, gastroenteritis, or many other serious conditions and illnesses. I think a second opinion would be in your best interest.

well, if you are upset, it could trigger these things... our belly is a reflection of how happy we are... if you are always nervous, depressed, or have something that you are having a hard time dealing with, I would say that is your problem... you may want to eat more yogurt and grains too...

I was going to say it might be gall bladder, but you say the doctor has ruled this out. But I have to say I went for 2 years with undiagnosed gall bladder disease. Sometimes it can be hard to diagnose because it presents with different symptoms for different people.

If it's acid reflux, I can tell you how I all but cured mine. 2 cups Raw apple cider vinegar; 1/2 Cup raw honey; 2 tablespoons baking soda (optional). Put in a 1 quart container and fill the rest with distilled water. Shake to mix. Drink a couple of swallows once in the morning and once in the p.m. Takes about a month and you should see good results at that time.

I know where you're coming from as I went through a similar phase some years ago. I did the following:
- Reduced amount of coffee intake (hardly drink it now)
- Took Gaviscon (for a short while, then stopped)
- Ate a very light snack (e.g. a cracker) before going to bed
- Took up yoga - worked wonders as it reduced stress and made my organs stronger.
- Ate fennel seeds after every meal
After a few weeks, it was all gone... now I hardly get it. Maybe it was just a short term infection, but those few things I did eased the pain!
Hope I've helped in some way.
