Getting a wound dressed doesn't hurt near as much as the initial wound. You can take some over-counter pain reliever up to a half hour before your dressing. I recently had a sarcoma (cancerous tumor of the muscle, in my case it was cancerous...) removed from my bicep and got to be awake for the surgery, pretty cool. Getting the stitches removed wasn't painful at all, and the initial dressing was weak as well. You shouldn't worry, the pain from a deep dressing is more of a sore pain and less sharp (cutting). Just be sure to take something before hand if you are worried.

Grow up, it's not like you're having your leg cut off!

I dont know really what kind of wound you are talking about, but most likely if the wound is still deep, then your doctor will, give you something for the pain, after healing to a certain degree, you will not have as much pain in the area, but i feel sure that he will use something, if he dont, then understand you are the patient, and it is your right , to let your doctor know, that you need something for the procedure is done, tell him you want something for the pain before he starts, and demand it if he dont, it is you , that will feel the pain, so tell him, I have worked with doctors a long time, and sometimes, you have to be right demanding with them.. It will go ok, Stand up for your rights.

Take it with a grain of salt and remember God never put more on us than we can handle. This could be a good time to reflect on things you've set aside, these things usually come about when we have pushed so much aside, everything happens for a reason, its our job to recognize when things happen.

Take pain meds you have 1 hour before. Go in knowing the pain will be there. Instead of being afraid of it. See it as a sensation in the body as any other (it's just a signal on a nerve). Feel it's power to distort and try to harness your mind to conciously control that sensation. You will learn that if you can control the pain instead of the pain controlling you, your body helps you out with endorphins "home-made heroin". You have the power to control this situation, you just have to see pain as all it is-ions moving across a membrane to send a signal into the brain that is interpreted as the sensation of pain.

1) Anxiety about it will only increase the pain sensation.
2) You do have the right to insist the doc give you something for pain prior to the dressing change.
3) You have the right to refuse the treatment if he doesn't,but that's not smart because the dressing does need to be changed.
4) What makes you think you won't be offered pain meds prior to the procedure? You got them yesterday.
5) If the pain is that all-encompassing for you, you have GOT to tell the doc you HAVE to have pain med.
6) Don't try to tough it out. Increased pain actually literally delays healing time.
7) Re-read step #3. Refuse to let the guy touch the site without giving you pain meds before. If it's pills, wait 45 minutes to 1 hour after you get the pain med to start the procedure. If it's an injection, like into a muscle, not at the site, wait about 30 minutes. If it's an injection right at the site, 2-3 minutes is good. If the thought of pain is so bad to you that you can't concentrate on anything else, you have got to be pre-medicated with pain medicine. Period.
8) If the guy refuses, report him.
