Is there anything over the counter that works like pyridum - for bladder spasms?!

Question: Bladder spasams are a symptom of an underlying problem you need to address with your family doctor. However, for mild relief, ASO Standard, which can be purchased over the counter works similar to pyridium, but is not as effective. Like pyridium, ASO does turn your urine orange and stains. I highly recommend you seek the care of your family physician.

I dont know what pyridum is, but you could try Buscopan, other name hyoscine, its an anti spasmodic. Your best bet would be to see the doctor though.

Why not go to your GP? If you're having bladder spasms they may want to investigate the cause.

I don't know but drink lots of water and lots of cranberry juice.

URISTAT- people use a lot. and AZO is another! Uristat I have heard great things about, but all mine are Rx now. Your intake of fluids and what you eat will HELP too! I suffer bladder problems, feel free to write me if you need to, or the link on my HP, is about medications on yahoogroups.

* Drink at least 8 glasses of water and other liquids a day.
* Drink juice made from unsweetened cranberry juice concentrate. Take cranberry tablets (look for these at health food stores).
* Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine. These can irritate the bladder.
* Get plenty of rest.
* Check for fever twice a day; in the morning and again in the evening.
* Take an over-the-counter medicine for pain. or take the OTC medicine Uristat, which relieves pain and spasms that come with a bladder infection. {Note: Uristat helps with symptoms, but doesn't get rid of the infection. You should see your health care provider to diagnose and treat the problem.}
* Go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge. Empty your bladder completely.
Has your doctor put you on anything like Detrol or Ditropan? Those are Rx's for spasms, Ditropan was one of the first meds I was given, as I had bladder spasms. I have a chronic condition though, I will take something for the rest of my life for it.
>>>Is yours acute or chronic? If female-are you (positive)+ you are not pregnant too?
The Ditropan helped me out a lot. It didn't help with frequency for me, just the spasms.

AZO is like the Pyridium.......
{{{ I was warned by my doctor not to take Pyridium
(AZO Std is the OTC version) too often or too regularly.?? }}}

Then the Uro put me on the valium. Did your doctor give you the ok to take something (OTC) so often? If not, I would chat with him/her about how often you can use it safely and whether or not there may be something better for to take (like Detrol, Ditropan etc) or the pharmacist.
Fluids are a big thing in causing the spasms. Chocolate and caffine and carbonation causes them, and sexual activity also.

Now, there is an Rx for Pyridium Plus that has an added antispasmodic, but I know the regular and the AZO are just straight bladder analgesics. ****************************

I took ditropan years ago, and it helped some, I tried the ditropan xl, have you tried that? I have used the Rx pyridium and the plus, plus is great but very expensive!it also works great but makes orange urine! and Elimron (rx only too) is a good med 4 the bladder problems.

Many health care providers prescribe Valium 2mg. three times per day. It helps to relax the pelvic floor muscles and the bladder, preventing spasms. Additionally, if you are drinking a lot of liquids (more than 4 ounces) at one time, you may want to take small sips every 5 to 10 minutes to prevent the bladder from going into spasm.
VALIUM works the best 4 a spasm. TRUE. (Rx)

many IC patients do very well on Ditropan or Detrol. I've found them to have more side-effects than valium, but each patient is different.
Discuss your options with your healthcare provider and ask which medication is appropriate for you. Good luck, and I hope you are able to get well. Get Well Soon.
