Could this cause a torn meniscus?!

Question: My niece was pushing the tire swing at her school one day, and the chain broke. Her hands were still holdingon to the chain when it fell. She was crying on the ground but ignored her pain and checked to see if the people that were in the tire swing were ok. one was just freaked out and was just a little bit sore. the other one had a headache because the chain fell on her head, and her leg hurt from being inside the tire when it fell. one of my nieces friends took the one with the headache to get an ice pack, and 2 of her other friends were helping her get to the bathroom cause her knee hurt so bad. her right knee and her right wrist were busted open, so i am assuming that her right side took the fall. she doesn't know if she heard a pop at the time because of all the noise from the swing falling. so her right knee is now hurting her sometimes, it seems to lock and catch, and it is sometimes painful on straightening it. it this a torn meniscus? could this cause a torn meniscus?

the first thing that she needs to do is go to the doctor and request that an MRI be done.... besides from a physical exam that is really the only way to know what stuructures in her knee are damages...

if the meniscus is torn it will most likely be either repaired or removed(depending on the size and location of the tear)...

a repair will take longer to recover from but will be the best thing if the tear is in the area with good blood supply and also poses the least amount of risk for developing arthritis later in life...(about 4 months before returning to competitive sprots)

she would be on crutches for about 4-6 weeks and in a brace that comes from mid-thigh to just above the ankle, this would be a hinge brace that will be "locked" in to a specific ROM(about 20*) for the first 3 weeks and then increased there after unitl full range is achieved....

based on ur description i would think that yes it is very possible that she has a torn meniscus or possibly some ligament damage...

best of luck with her recovery
