How Serious is my Head Injury?!

Question: I was at my gym getting ready to play 5 on 5 pick up ball, when i suddenly got hit in the head with a basketball. The ball hit me directly on the forehead and i fell to the floor instantly. After realizing that i was hit in the head and felt the pain coming (5 seconds after i fell), I reached my hand out and my buddy picked me up. I was dazed for a few minutes and started to get a headache. I sat down for 10 minutes, then got back in the game (I had trouble staying focused and was in a bit of pain while playing). I was able to sleep good that night and woke up feeling normal. I still have a minor headache all around my head. Should i wait until my headache goes away before playing again?? Thanks.

Could be a concussion.
A serious head injury would not have allowed you to get back into the game.
If you had fallen asleep and nobody could wake you up, that would a sign on a serious head injury.
If you had a serious head injury, you would not have been able to write such an intelligent question.
I am also assuming that you returned to school today and did well.
You may wish to wait until the headache goes away before you engage in any sort of "killer animal" activity.
O.K. now here is the anatomy lesson: Have you ever seen jello in a bowl? and if you hit the bowl on one side, the jello will slap against the side and then bounce across the bowl and hit the other side? Your brain is quite similar.
(No wait, I mean EVERYBODY's brain is similar. I am not calling you a jello-head) If you got hit in the forehead, your brain would have hit both the front and the back of the inside of your skull. If it had hit hard enough to do any serious damage, you would know by now.

Sure

Yes because I've had the same experience

go to the doctor.

Yeah it could be a concussion lol. You shouldn't go to sleep right away when you have one, you should get it checked out. But whatever, obviously you're alive and well enough to ask a question on Yahoo! so I'd say you're okay. Don't exert yourself, wait until all the symptoms are gone before doing anything where you could potentially bash your skull in again.

Doh!

Yes...but with a concussion you need to get to your local ER. Head injuries can be SERIOUS especially if you lost consciousness.

It does sound like a mild concussion. You should be seen by your doctor before participating in gyn etc. I have had concussions......

Of course this can be a concussion! You should see a physician before you play again to make sure you're ok!

Yes it's a concussion and you should have gotten immediate medical attention when it happened. Traumatic Brain Injury is no joke. If you hit your head again before your first concussion has healed (as much as they can heal...), you could sustain significant brain damage.

yes; youll be fine

Yes wait --- you had a minor concussion. You should be fine....watch for any neurological signs - weakness, confusion, vomiting, blurred vision etc..... you are most likely fine --- your head is hard!

You don't state how long ago this happened, but from the symptoms that you describe you have defiantly suffered from a concussion injury.

The fact that you still have "a minor headache" is of concern.
Again, you don't say for how long you have had it.

See a doctor, or it might be better still to go to a hospital ER department, where a CT or MRI scan can be organised. Doctors would want to rule out the possibility of a small bleed having occurred when your head was hit, and also check that if it is a small bleed, that it has stopped.

Traumatic head injuries should always be taken seriously, so go and get checked out.

Good luck!
