Question: I would suggest now. My husband is a PE teacher at the elementary level and he keeps deodorant sticks in his office for kids he recognizes need it. He has given some away to kids as young as 3rd grade so 8-9 yrs old. I know the health teacher does the same. Starting with healthy hygiene habits now wouldn't hurt. You don't need to wait until they start to stink to start get them deodorant.

Start now even if he doesn't stink yet, start the habit young, teenage boys are notoriously bad about not using deodorant.
Good question, but Iagree wit the previous post. Sometimes kids are oblivious to their own body odor and may need a little guidance.
Most would agree that any child that has began puberty should use a deoderant. I mean, unless a child does not bath, they do not make the same smell until they reach puberty. However, if they play a lot of sports, you might consider a deoderant made for teens before you go to a "real" deoderant
There are absolutely no health benefits of deodorant (except to bystanders). To the contrary, they cause all sorts of problems such as irritation, pimples and abscesses (I've had to drain several of these for patients). unless he is stinky already the best education would be to get him in the habit taking regular showers and developing good hygiene. When the time comes, introduce the deodorant. You, your son, and his Physician will be happier for it.
