Are ribs just extremely strong, or did I luck out?!

Question: A 180lb barbell slipped (After someone bumped into it...) and landed square on my chest. I don't notice any pain assosciated with poking at it, and I don't notice anything different about the area, so I assume my ribs survived. Are ribs extremely strong, or did I just luck out and avoid breaking em?

Sounds like the barbell landed in just the right way with just the right impact to cause little damage. You may notice some bruising and tenderness tomorrow, but yes, ribs are pretty tough. The curving gives them strength and the ligaments that hold them together give them flexibility. I would say take some aspirin or ibuprofen tonight just to ward off the possibility of soreness in the area tomorrow, but I think you'll be fine! Congrats!!

They are springy like a sapling, at least when you're young. It is pretty hard to break one.

You may have cracked them without even knowing it. Ribs are very deep inside of your body and some people walk around for a year or two without knowing they have a broken rib.

Ribs at the right angle are very strong just like a punch at the wrong angle will break one. Ribs aren't covering your chest though.
