It generally takes 6-8 weeks for a bone to heal. However, often times with broken fingers a doctor will allow you to not have it taped for that long. Someone above mentioned a ligament issue. If there is something wrong with the ligament then it is really important to keep it splinted, but if not you shouldnt have to keep t taped that long. I would call the place where you were seen and ask them to be sure. In the meantime good luck learning to write differently :)

My boss bent his finger playing basketball and had to have it taped/braced for six weeks I think, and the six weeks aren't up yet.

Check with your doctor to see if there really is any damage, because my boss thought it was nothing, just that he needed to keep it taped, and now he might need a little surgery to repair a ligament

You should have it splinted, padded and then taped.

It's up to you to tough it out but I think that you should have it checked out by a doctor and be sure that it is set right. Otherwise it may not be in correct alignment and may not heal correctly and you will lose mobility.
