HELPPPPP?!? LYRICA for Nerve Damage?!?!

Question: After an auto accident where i fractured my hip and pelvis, along with many other bones, I was left with nerve damage and severe pain. I was put on Vicoden, Motrin 800 and many others that worked for the time being. Now the Dr. has prescribed Lyrica for Nerve Damage. I have read some articles and previous questions on here and I am a bit concerned with having the Rx filled. Anyone who is taking Lyrica or has previous knowledge of it, help please!!

Do you really gain weight from being on this medication?

What are the side effects?

Did it help relieve the pain?

Concerned :-/ Please help in answering my questions?!

Thanks

I am a nurse practitoner and I myself have been on lyrica for a back injury. I was ok on the lower doses for example 75 mg a day. But when I jumped up to 300mg a day which is the max dose I gained wt and my hands and feet swelled up with a 4+ pitting edema. Which means that they were so awollen that if I stuck my finger into the inflammation it took more than 4 secs for it to come back to normal. My shoes wouldn't fit and my hands got swollen also. However the pain did go away. Neurontin doesn't have these side effects on people. I am not sure why the lyrica has this side effect but it may make you retain a lot of fluid. I went to my cardiologist and he did a test that monitored how much fluid retention I had and it showed almost 40 lbs of fluid from this drug.
I would go ahead and fill it. Take the medication as RX'd but if you start to experience these things contact your dr immediately.

Hopefully you will only take one thing at a time.

I was on Lyrica for only a month. I was very sleepy and in a fog. It did, however, make the pain subside. Because of the side effects I weened off it and found the nerve problem had improved enough that I only needed Advil or Tylenol.

What is worse pain or extra weight? Maybe if you are relieved of pain you will be able to exercise again and it is a win win.

If the Lyrica gives you those side effects you can switch there are other drugs for nerve pain.

Lyrica is generally a very effective and safe drug. Everyone reacts a little differently to drugs, so you won't know if you are going to have certain side effects or not until you try. Also, drugs like Lyrica can sometimes have worse side effects when you start but then get better over time.

Your doctor thinks it will be good for you - I say get the script filled and give it a month or two. Talk to your doctor about any troublesome side effects and let him/her guide you.

I have not been on lyrica, but I am on neurontin ( which is in lyrica) and it is a nerve block medicine. It blocks the pain between your pain sight and the brain. It does work, I have been on it for 2 years for fibromyalgia, but it does not block 100% of the pain (you are not numb, like when you take a narcotic.)

My wife donated a kidney to her father 2 months ago,the surgeon who performed the operation made a huge mistake and know she has nerve damage in her leg,she stopped seeing the hospital doctors and went to are family doctor he gave her Lyrica in free sample trial bottles .she says it reallty helps with her pain at night and she is able to rest.she takes 2 vicodein a day and one lyrica at night.are insurance will not cover the lyrica for some reason so are doctor gives her free samples for now,so she runs out often and she dosent get very good rest the nights she dosent have it.She also said to tell you that she has side effects on the vicodein and has never had one side affect on the lyrica in her case.she said also it is the best pain relief she has had and would highly recomend you try it for a couple days .also good luck nerve damage i8s tuff to deal with ,it has been very hard on her and are family but we are getting thru it .but with help from your family and doc you will be fine too.we hope this helps you.

it made me a zombie

i had to stop taking it, it did nothing for me

I took Lyrica for around 6 months, and then weened off of it because I didn't have need for it (my spinal cord stimulator was providing me with relief so I didn't need it), but I am currently going back on Lyrica (since my spinal cord stimulator has failed). Weight gain is a possible side effect though most people don't suffer with a serious weight gain problem with Lyrica. I am able to swim regularly so I have not had any side effects of weight gain, though most people I know (who aren't active) don't suffer serious weight gain problems with Lyrica. My main side effects have been tiredness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. I haven't had any pain relief (I have been taking Lyrica for a neurological condition called RSD/CRPS, not nerve damage, though they believe I may have some nerve damage), but I am willing to try taking Lyrica again to see if I can get any pain relief since my pain is typically so severe. I know many people who have had great benefits from Lyrica, which have greatly out weighted the side effects. This link has some good information about Lyrica http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-93965-Ly... Good luck!
