Is there an illness which makes you sleep alot? (other than laziness...)?!

Question: Recently I seem to "need" to sleep about 12+ hours.

I only work part-time, so I'm not over tired or over stressed. I could easily sleep more than this- probably even a whole 24 hours, but I make myself get up as I'm aware how slovenly it is. Once I'm up I feel half-asleep for about an hour and can't really do anything, then I'm ok for a few hours (like.. 3 or 4?) and then start feeling sleepy again.

I wonder if the excess sleep kind of puts me in a "sleep haze" which makes me feel like I need more and more?

Even sleeping so much, I'm increasingly aware of myself saying things like "I'm tired" and feeling exhausted/sleepy all the time.

I've tried setting an alarm, but I have this habit of waking up several hours early and, half asleep, turning the alarm off if I know i don't have work in the morning so it never works. It's like I become another person when I'm sleeping- one entirely without reason.

I feel like this is beyond normal laziness? Could there be a medical reason?

When I suddenly became sleepy all the time (needing 2 hours nap even with 8 to 10 hours of sleep) I ws confused as well. Then I found a lump in my neck. Turned out I had Thyroid cancer. It was messing up the amount of hormones my thyroid produced and made me sleepy. My weight started dropping off for no reason. There were some other little side-efects, but being tired all the time with no energy was the worst. I would suggest you go to the doctor and get your thyroid hormones checked out. If that's what is wrong they can give you meds to balance it out and you will feel a LOT better. Check your family history, there may be clues there. At least five other people in my family had imbalanced thyroid hormones.

I wouldn't worry about it.

change your diet and eat more protein and less calories...meats and high protein sources maintain your energy level a lot longer than instant-calorie food like in fast-food restaurants.

sleep apnea?
