Would you have a colonoscopy done without any sedation?!

Question: I did, and I just wanted to let people know that it CAN be done, and the entire procedure was virtually painless. It was interesting to watch it on the monitor and talk to the doctor and have him explain what he was doing.
If you think you need to be knocked out and drugged into oblivion and that this will be a painful procedure.....it's not at all painful and 99% of people could definatley do this without drugs.
PS. if you want to save yourself alot of trouble and cost for the preparation, go to the pharmacy and just buy a bottle of Magnesium Citrate in Cherry or Grape flavor, it only costs 2.49. Chill the bottle for a few hours and drink the entire thing. It tastes like soda but a little thicker in texture, not bad tasting at all, and does a very good job of cleaning you out....just stay very close to a rest room and drink plenty of water or clear fluids so you don't get dehydrated.

I had one done that way because that is standard at my HMO. There was no pain, just "discomfort" like being constipated.

I watched the progress and found it so interesting that I thought they should collect those videos and run them on the TVs in the waiting rooms (anonymously of course). It beats reading crummy old magazines, for entertainment value.

no thanks, it's more the fact that I'd rather not see people putting something up there

Do you think you're the only one who has done this? You're not.

I have had it done twice; once WITH sedation, and once WITHOUT sedation...and I'd choose WITH..hands down! It doesn't "hurt" hurt, but its maddeningly uncomfortable (not to mention embarrassing to have someone rooting around in your ****). If I had to do it a third time, I'd want to be sedated again so I'd have no memory of it.

If the colon is not redunded it may be tolerable. But for most people, it is not only unconfortable, but even painful.
Most of the endoscopists use a narcotic drug and Versed intraveously.Versed causes a transient, most of the time, harmless retrograde amnesia. A relaxed patient without much discomfort and pain yields the best diagnostic results. You can ask the endoscopist to give a copy of the DVD made, which you can watch and get explained by the doctor if you were "knocked
out" during the procedure.

Umm... I see docs use versed everyday and havent seen any problem with the patients.

I would definitely want sedation. I've never had one, but I've been present for several and helped with a few.
