Severe shin splints?!

Question: well, thats what I think it is. sharp, shooting pains going up from that bone near the arch of my right foot, and they continue up the inner side of my right shin.
I had to stop doing indoor track this winter, half way through the season, and now that outdoor track is in about 4 weeks I've started running and working out again. the problem is, after a week or so of running, weight training, etc. my shin pain is back again, and its bad.
I'm 17 btw.
what can I do?? I dont want to miss another season

I agree with both of them! The only thing that a doctor would tell you to do is rest and ice and pain killers. I also have severe shin splints. I never went to the doctor for it and I knew that the only way to get rid of them was to rest them, but I never did. I have had them for about 3 years now and on bad days I can't even walk without shooting aches and pains going through my shins. You need to ice them for 20 minutes every few hours. Especially after practice. Icing them before practice would help to numb the area, and make it less painful for a while. Elevate them as much as possible, (always when icing)! You can buy braces for them but they tend to be a bit expensive. I bought mine for $14.99 at Walgreens. (But I have them in both legs so it was about $30 for me). Also you can tape them. There are a lot of sites online if you go to google and type in taping shin splints or something along that line. They will tell you how to tape it. You can also wrap them with ace wrap. I have found that comforting. Make sure that you stretch them out real well before and after practices and any other time you feel nessicary. Do exercises, like tracing the ABC's with you foot/ankle which will strengthen your shins. Also, place the heal of your foot on the ground and tape your toes to the ground. This will make your shins ache after a while, and you shouldn't stop when they start to ache because the strengthening is just beginning. Take pain killers like Ibuprofen (Motrin) for pain and swelling, and if they hurt bad enough go see your doctor. I hope this helps and I hope your shins feel better! Good Luck!

If its shin splints then the only way for them to heal is to rest. I got shin splints and I was out for about a month. Rest until track starts- and when I say rest avoid doing any running. When track starts and you have rested for a month you should be okay.

ice and rest. while sitting or standing, do the ABC's with your foot. the athletic trainer at your school can tape you up to alleviate the pain
