Tylex is a paracetamol / codine mix. It contains 500mg of Paracetamol per capsule. The normal dose to cause suspicion of liver damage is 10g ie 20 tylex or more, 5g (10 capsules) can cause damage in certain individuals-

? patients on long-term treatment with drugs which induce liver enzymes (e.g. barbiturates, St John's Wort);

? people who regularly drink excessive amounts of alcohol;

? patients with depleted glutathione levels (e.g. eating disorders, cystic fibrosis, HIV infection, starvation, cachexia).

You didnt take that many, but the fact that you took too many, in itself would be a reason to attend your nearest A/E department.

If you took them yesterday then they are well in your system by now, so the normal treatment of activated charcoal isn't going to be effective. There are other ways of dealing with it, so telling you that you are going to die is a bit extreme!

Chances are the quantity you took, and the timescale you took it over will mean yher is no need for treatment so try not to worry, BUT go down to the nearest A/E department and tell them what you have taken, and to the best of your recollection when, and they will tell you what need to be done.

Be carefull with anything with paracetamol in it though please.

EDIT

DONT take cold symptom tablets, they mostly contain paracetamol!!!! Last thing you need is more! The paracetamol OD is more serious than any allergic reaction you took yesterday- the fact you are still breathing the next day, and it is easing off means you can now forget about it. Taking other medicines on top of a paracetamol OD is a bad idea.

IIf you took between 10 and 20 , go to the hospital , you are probably dying.

Paracetamol is the safest drug in normal dosages , but , too much of it can quickly become a lethal dose , as opposed to other drugs .
Your liver will shut down , and you will die.

paracetamol needs 24 hours to half the dosage ion your body.. so it has some cumulative effect.

If you've been taking a lot over the past couple of days .. yes , you are probably having liver failure .. go to hospital.

The codeine in it is much less life threatening.

If you've only taken 6 ... that's more than ok if it's the 500 mg kind.

BUT an allergic reaction to paracetamol is very unlikely.. And codeine in those amounts can only give you some breathing problems.

Have you taken aspirin or ibuprofen ? those are very likely candidates for allergic reactions..

What you can actually do , is take some anti-hystamine medication , that will probably help

xysal , triludan ...

Cold symptom tablets can help too.

I don't know if you can get anti-histamine over the counter in the UK..

If that doesn't relieve the symptoms in the next few hours , go see a doctor.
You should also seriously investigate what pain medication you are allergic to. since there's not a lot of categories to choose from. there's 4 big groups , Paracetamol , Ibuprofen & naproxen , aspirin , and the opiate family (codeine , morphine ...). If you are allergic to one of those 4 groups , make sure you have it on a card in your wallet since it may save your life one day.

Go and see your doctor as an overdose of paracetamol can cause serious long term problems with liver and kidneys.But the dosage you took is not life threatening so don't worry about what Backtwat said.

Ring NHS Direct now, they'll tell you what to, the number is 0845 4647 or just go to accident and emergency at your local hospital. DO NOT take anything else untill you get checked out.

Doc's advise compulsory.
