Whats the difference between co-codamol and co-proxamol?!

Question: what are they used to treat? and why have doctors stopped prescribing co-proximal?

Answers: what are they used to treat? and why have doctors stopped prescribing co-proximal?

Both contain paracetamol, to which another 'so called' pain killer has been added. In both cases this is an opiate derivative, however it adds no more than 5% to the analgesic potency but massively increases the side effects.
Co-codamol contains codiene; this often causes severe constipation and can cause abdominal pain and headache. Codeine is also quite addictive and there are undoubtedly tens of thousands of hidden addicts. They tend to feel edgy and unwell if they miss their codiene; this gives them the impression that it is less effective than paracetamol alone, whereas the problem is in fact a withdrawal symptom. Low dose Co-codamol is available over the counter.

Coproxamol contains dextropropoxephene, this is more addictive than codeine and in relatively low overdose causes respiratory depression and sometimes death. It was withdrawn in 2004 and is no longer available in the UK.

Co proxamol is being withdrawn from the market it is just used as a pain killer. Co codamol is a combination of paracetamol 500mg and codeine phosphate either 8mg or 30mg depending on your prescription. You cannot but co prox over the counter but can the co codamol 8/500 strength. Hope this helps x Ps co codamol is also a pain killer!!

Co-codamol is a compound analgesic drug containing paracetamol and codeine.
Co-proxamol is also an analgesic but contains paracetamol and a weak opioid analgesic.
Co-proxamol is used to relieve mild to moderate pain that has not responded to paracetamol or other nonopioid analgesics alone. Side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, constipation and nausea. Yet the drug may be habit-forming over a long period.

co proxamol has a lower amount of paracetamol than co codamol. Studies showed that co-proxamol was no better for pain than plain paracetamol and this is why it is being taken off the market.
