Knee injuries from yoga?!

Question: Have you recieved knee injury from yoga, or know someone, or have read any official reporting on it?

Wouldn't you say the injury happened because the person was ignorant about the yoga pose and brought it on themselves? Like, they accidently slipped or twisted wrong while doing a complicated pose....

OR- can yoga really eventually injure your knees?

**(I ask because my Mom is not thrilled that I've been dabbling in yoga and also not thrilled that I will be now having my sisters do it with me. She insists she heard yoga is bad for the knees.
Any helpful info will be appreciated!!)**

About ten years ago, I had a left knee ACL reconstruction, after a volleyball injury tore that ligament.

About five years ago, I started regular Iyengar-style yoga classes once a week. Plus, I do an hour of practice on my own five days a week.

My left knee has never been completely normal since the vball accident.
I'm an avid road, and off-road cyclist, and I rarely notice any knee issues while biking (tho a lot of people do).

However, I have learned to be very cautious with asanas that stress the knee sideways, such as Lotus variations, or Pigeon pose variations.
I once attempted full lotus (a pose I do not practice regularly) without being fully warmed up, & it aggraveted the old vball injury. It took several weeks of babying the knee for it to return to how it felt before lotus attempt.

I also usually avoid doing Hero pose (Virasana) with my heels out to side of hips; instead, I usually sit on the heels, even tho technically, that is not correct foot placement in that pose.

As is commonly advised, don't rush unfamilar asanas, and listen to your body if in discomfort.
Yoga is great; It offers so many benefits, both physical, & other.
I plan to do it for rest of life.
