Trouble sleeping, nothing helps!!?!

Question: So I have a horrible time sleeping at night, and nothing i ever try helps. I've tried the sleeping aid Ambien and it just makes me really out of it but not tired, i lay in bed feeling like the room is moving but still can't sleep. I've also tried NyQuil and when i had bronchitis, the dr gave me a prescribed cough syrup that he said would just knock me out after a teaspoon, but after drinking half the bottle i still wasn't sleeping, or would fall asleep for 15 minutes then wake up feeling dizzy.
I always just lay in bed at night tossing and turning. Then in the mornings i'm so groggy and can never get up. Do you have any ideas that could help me?? I dont know what else to try!

I recently went to the doctors for an anxiety disorder that often kept me awake at night. I'd stay up all night thinking about all sorts of terrible things, and no matter how tired I was, I couldn't fall asleep. If you're having trouble sleeping because your mind won't let you, try talking to your doctor and maybe mention the prescription my doctor gave me - Ativan. It helps relax my mind while also making me drowsy. I haven't exactly noticed that it makes me more tired, but I do sleep a lot better now. However, I'm assuming your doctor gave you a cough syrup with codeine in it for your bronchitis...I was given this also and that did knock me out, as does NyQuil...so even though the Ativan worked for me, it may not for you. Still, I'd see a doctor and see what other options you may have.

As for other non-medications that may help you, try seeing if you're more comfortable sleeping in a different environment. My sister, for example, gets to sleep better when the television is on. Some people like a little light, while others like it completely dark. I like having a dark room with cold air so I can cuddle up in my blankets, and I NEED the noise of a fan in the room, and no other noises. Lol. So experiment a little and see what works best for you.

Maybe read a book, listen to some slower music, or take a warm bath before you go to bed to help yourself relax. Maybe try drinking milk a while before bed - something I've heard helps, but have never personally tried it. If you have someone special that you stay with, a nice body massage before bedtime always helps. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're comfortable enough, climaxing may also help - seriously...not meant to be inappropriate.

Anyway, I hope something will help you; if not, please see a doctor. Not getting enough sleep is not healthy. I wish you the best of luck!

phenergan or something with codeine in it. they do the trick for me,

Try a couple of glasses of warm milk about half an hour before bed and try to relax when you are trying to sleep don't think about falling asleep it tends to keep you awake!
I had insombnia about two years ago and that can help.

sounds like you have a sleeping disorder. you'll fall asleep when you get tired enough. close your eyes and play soft music and have it low sometimes it helps. dont open your eyes til you fall asleep. accept no interruptions....lol like i got room to talk...i dont sleep either. if you like tea...thats supposed to help too (herbal teas).

try going for a run a couple of hrs before its time to sleep. i work shifts so sleeping through the day i find the hardest but the jog has changed that and now i sleep just fine, and its natural, not from a pharmacy so its free !

First off, I know all about sleep problems because they have plagued me most of my life (since early teens). Now without meds, I get about 6 hours (which is the norm for my body). You should know that Ambien does not work for everyone, it also can have a paradoxical effect, that is it keeps your brain awake even if you are not fully concious. So that part you need to discuss with your doc, can you ask for a med change? Nyquil as you have found makes you dizzy, drinking half the bottle is not great idea either, so obviously you now know to avoid that at all costs. Here are some non-medicinal things I can suggest that work for me: Quiet, dark, cold room (make sure the temp is about 65 degrees not above); reading a really boring book; not watching anything violent, or too stimulating about 2 hours before trying to sleep; using a moist heat pack around my shoulders (one I have is called bed buddy) which you can get at most chain/drug stores; not eating past 7PM (don't ask me why this helps but it does); drinking more water during the day; and last but not least I am finally able to collapse into bed if I exhaust my energy during the day (so maybe work a cardio routine or something similar into your schedule). Hope one of these suggestions work for you!
