Twisting or dislocating a knee?!

Question: In an injury, if a person's knee cap slides out to the outside of the knee, making a person colapse, is that considered dislocating your knee? If not, what does 'dislocating a knee' mean? I've always called that injury to my knee 'twisting'.

I'm an experienced knee twister :s
Yes I am familiar with what I need to do with helping my knee, it's just a stupid thing that seems to have to happen to me at least once a year.

To dislocate a knee, the ligament(s) around your knee has to be torn. The reason for this is, the ligaments hold your knee cap and surrounding bones into place. If one of these ligaments should tear it would cause your knee cap or surrounding bones to fall out of alignment. Ligaments can tear do to stress,a sudden jerk of the knee, or one have the knee experiencing a pull and the other not going along with it for whatever reason.

"Dislocating a knee" is when the knee twists out of the place where it was supposed to be in the kneecap.

You are not supposed to have your knee twist out THAT often. have someone check it.
my social studies teacher had injured a knee, and one of the tendons ripped, making the knee dislocate very often. He had a surgery, and when he came back, spent half the class answering questions on this topic.

Apparently, there are four main tendons holding the knee in place, two of which cross at the front of the knee, and the other two cross at the back. The social studies teacher has ripped one of the back ones.

hi there,
If your knee cap has moved to the side, then yes, you have dislocated your patella (knee cap).. this can be very painful.
Knee twisting would involve more of the ligaments.
If you are dislocating your knee cap regularly, then you may need to think about when it happens, if during sport, then wear a support, If you see your gp, the can refer to to physiotherapy, where you can sort this out.

yes
disolcated
