Yikes. Well, the key sign that it's broken would be pain. See if she can wiggle her toe around at all. If it makes her wince in pain, go to a walk-in (limp-in? lol) clinic. If the x-ray says broken, they may put a cast on her foot.

Turning purple like that is the main indicator of a broken toe (as opposed to a normal stubbed toe or sprain or something). It'd probably be a good idea to see a doctor about it, and don't push it around or put too much pressure on it.

My brother broke his toe, when a concrete block dropped on it. They took x-rays, told him it was broken and then said they do nothing for it.

funny story i was running through my house and i hit the coffee table really hard with my foot. like i was screaming and crying and everything it just wouldn't stop hurting. about 30 minutes later it became swollen and purple and i could barely walk on it. my mom got scared and took me to urgent care where i found out i had broke my pinky toe and they even thought i fractured my leg. so they gave me a boot and crutches. by the next day it became black and just nasty looking. [i had the boot for about 2 weeks]
So i would think your daughter has fractured her toe.
It would be a good idea to take her to get it X-rayed.

good luck.
wish her the best.
