How bad is cigar, cigarette, etc. smoke when you are fighting off a head cold an!

Question: Does smoking make the symptoms of winter allergies and a head cold a million times worse and harder to overcome?

I don't smoke but my grandmother does and I told her to quit while she has head cold/sinus allergies etc. and she said that if she could quit she would but it's too hard for her.

So tell me just yes or no does it make your symptoms worse if you smoke during illness and does it take longer to overcome?

Thanks.

I don't know how she can stand to smoke when she has allergies/cold and has post nasal drip and coughs....duh.

Really bad! Smoking irritates the lining of the bronchial tubes, throat and nose, making already sensitive tissue even more inflamed. Now, that aside, your grandmother has been smoking a looooong time, so she may actually perceive the withdrawal symptoms as worse than the symptoms from the allergies and ilnness(es). If she chooses to keep smoking, there's not much you can do (it is one of the strongest addictions known!) -- but if you are sick, don't subject yourself to her second-hand smoke, either. Maybe not having you visiting her will get her attention....
Hope she feels better soon :>)

i think it does, everyone i know that smokes and gets sick usually ends up worse off, even in the hospital with respiratory problems from the illness.

Smoking and second-hand smoke are the worst things for any sort of respiratory illness. The problem is that most people can't just quit when they become ill, this is a very difficult addiction (unless you're like my Dad who had a heart attack and was told "you can either smoke or you can live" - he's never smoked again, but he still craves it so he chews a lot of gum).

Yes Yes Yes. Anything affecting your upper respiratory tract will be 10,000 times worse if you are smoking and taking in toxins.

Your best bet is to stay outdoors..awake from the smoky environment..

smoking is horrible ALL the time no matter what, yes!! they can make colds so much worse and usually smoking will leave a permanent cough. please cinvince your grandmother to stop!! tell her there are 43,000 chemicals in 1 cigarette,
smoking takes years off time to spend doing other things, and wasted about 350,000 dollars in a lifetime!!!! good luck hope i helped!!
