Pain management help.......?!

Question: i just found out i have to have a root canal today :(

im only 15 and i was really scared when they tried to do the first treatment today whil;e i was in the chair..... it hurt so much [like an electric shock] when i was in the chair and they were doing the needle... i screamed and sat up and i couldnt stop crying enough for them to do it at all today

they sent me away with nothing to help ease the pain i have been having and i cant even clench my teeth now.... :(... and its all because last yr a dentist screwed up this simple filling... she is no longer in practice now!!!

i just want to know what excercises i can do if i try and ge this procedure done again???? so that i won scream and all

thanks everyone!

Did your mom or dad come in with you during the treatment? If so they should have asked the doctor to help you with your pain and fear. In fact, any dentist that refuses to take the pain and emotional distress into account can be cited by the Dental Board of your state.

The fear of dentists is pretty awful - I know- I HATE going to the dentist, but, unfortunately , do to an accident I've had to have several root canals done.

The dentist should prescribe a mild sedative before you come in or are given when you come in and you wait 30 minutes before you have your treatments. If the dentist refuses - fire him/her. Any dentist worth their license knows some people need help because of fear of pain.

The dentist can also use nitrous oxide to help you relax and sedate you. A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe in the nitrous. After about 15 minutes you will feel light and a bit dizzy, and then you will sleep through the procedure.

If your root canal is in a back tooth no regular dentist should be doing the procedure. You need an endodontist/oral surgeon to do this properly. My dentist flatly refused me when I asked him to do my back tooth because he had done such a good job on the other two. He said this was a specialty and he did not do them in his office.

As far as your current pain, have mom or dad call your pediatrician/doctor and explain you are in a lot of pain. The doctor can prescribe you something both for pain and for your fear.

good luck. I'll be praying for you

Have your mom or dad (whichever parent is with you) tell the dentist about the horrific pain you suffered both when the procedure was being done and when you were sent home. Tell them you want to find out if it's possible that they can put you to sleep during the procedure and be sure to get pain meds that you can tolerate for after the procedure. Let your mom or dad be the ones that control the pain meds for you as it's important to not take too much, or to not take meds too close together (timeframe) and you may not have a clear mind while on them to properly dispense them as directed. For now, try putting a tea bag on the gum where it hurts, ask if you can have tylenol for the pain, and alternate with a heat/ice compress against the facial area nearest the tooth/jaw pain. Good luck.
