I suffer from migraines as well - I am on medication which keeps the major attacks at bay but I still suffer daily from headaches. I eventually went to a naturopath who completely changed my diet and believe it or not, it worked!! As long as I stick to my diet and take my medication I am migraine free.

I tried acupucture - very relaxing and probably good for stress but didn't work for my migraines.

The usual migraine protocol we use in the hospital I work in is as follows:

3 soluable aspirin

an antinausea injection (but you can get them as a tablet)

plenty of fluids

then chlorpromazine 12.5mg - 25mg as an injection (but he could try Phenergan (promethazine) 25mg orally)

I have them from time to time. You have to locate the source and prevent them if possible. For me, I cant eat too much chocolate, drink too many cokes, I have to drink a bunch of water, No cigarette smoke and a large amount of suppressed stress can trigger a migraine for me, so i do my best to avoid the cause. I also take imetrex the nasal inhalant when I feel one coming. If it gets too bad its too late. Once I do get one the best thing for me to do is sleep it off, I have a high tolerance for pain and nausea. I put on a sleeping mask to cut out all light and sleep as they can knock me out.

excedrin migrain is good stuff

Locate a physician that specializes in the treatment of pain, especially migraines. The treatment of migraine headaches has improved in the last few years. A combination of medications that prevent migraines from occurring and one that is given after it occurs may be what your dad needs.
If he is unable to locate a specialist in your area, his family doc should be familiar with the updated treatment of migraines.
Good luck from one thats been there.

Painkillers don't work for me either. Heat, dehydration, smoke, caffeine (or lack of) and bright lights can all trigger migraines.
Some doctors use caffeine to treat migraines.
I don't so much know about acupuncture, but a friend of mine does the 'pressure point' thing with her hands (I think its kinesiology), and that's worked for me on occasions too.

When he gets one: a dark, cool, silent room. Cold cloth for eyes. A cup of tea to wash down your painkillers can help (not only does it settle your tummy, but has caffeine which can help). Apparently lavender oil massaged into the base of your neck and head helps.

i suffer from migraines also. The best thing I have found to take is imitrex at THE FIRST SIGN of a migraine. It is a little expensive but worth not having them! Also, I got one of those wrap around pillows and put it in the microwave for 2 min and then wrap around my neck. That eases up the pain a lot!! They do run in the family, my mother had them, I have them and now my daughter has had a few. Good luck. I dont wish those things
