Question: This happens to me at least once or twice a year, but it happens to my husband once every month or so. He just sleeps through the alarm and wakes up right when it's time for him to be at work or after he was supposed to be there.

Sleep deprivation and long term fatigue cause this.

Most Americans do not get enough sleep. The average adult needs between 8.5 and 9.5 hours to be fully functional.

If he is working/exercising hard and/or drinking and only getting 7 or less hours of sleep, then he is chronically sleep deprived and will sleep through almost anything if he is exhausted enough.

In fact, anybody who needs an alarm clock to wake up is likely sleep deprived.

The best bet is to get 8.5 hours a night, or to at least get 9 hours a couple of times a week.

He should also try going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. The cycle will help.

Lastly, make sure that he does not have sleep apnea. If he snores very loud at night and stops breathing for up tot 5 seconds in his sleep, then he is not getting "efficient sleep" and needs to see a Dr.

He likely hates himself for sleeping in, but for some reason he is totally exhausted. The trick is to figure out why he is so exhausted.

Finally, if he suffers from depression,he will have trouble getting up in the morning and needs to get treated for it.

Not enough sleep would be my guess. Maybe the alarm clock just isn't annoying enough.

It may not be that he isn't getting to bed early enough, or that he isn't sleeping long enough, but there are sleep disorders that can cause the sleep to not be effective enough.

Have him get checked for sleep disorders. The most commonly known one is Sleep Apnea. You can, if you are awake at the right time, probably make a pretty good guess at this one. Does he snore? Do you ever notice that he has not quite woken up, but startled himself, or stopped breathing for what seems like a long time? These are symptoms of Sleep Apnea, and you could go right for testing for that.

This can be a real problem in terms of how not getting to work on time can cause all kinds of problems with the boss.

Hey, you could also track how that relates to any drug, alcohol situations...If it always happens on the morning after getting particularly drunk or high, (maybe two nights, delayed reaction), or if it happens every time he takes cold medecine, or whatever. Coffee consumption. Such things can cause one to oversleep.
