I haven't slept in 72 hours. What should I do?!?!

Question: I just cannot fall asleep. I lie in bed and just worry about the fact that I'm not tired. I'm out of it and had to leave work early, but I'm not tired.

I've been there a million times... okay, maybe not a million. The number one thing I can tell you is... stop worrying about not sleeping. While you lie in bed, do not think about sleep... do not think about getting to sleep... do not think about not being able to sleep. That being established, try this...
Take some melatonin - melatonin generally comes in 1-5 mg doses - it's best to start with the minimum you need, but 2.5 mg would probably be good for you. I recommend the sublingual kind - it works much faster.
Watch tv for 20-30 minutes while the melatonin gets into your system.
Go lie down in bed and make yourself as comfortable as possible. If the melatonin has already set in and you're feeling drowsy, great... get some sleep. If not, move on to this - Tense and relax every single part of your body, from your toes to your face. Tense up your toes, relax them completely. Tense up your whole feet, relax... your calves, relax... your thighs, relax. Do this with every muscle part all the way up to your facial muscles, then do all of it again, from your face all the way back down to your toes.
After you've done this, just lie there, staying in a completely relaxed state. Do NOT think about sleeping. Just lie there. Do not get frustrated and angry and think... "Grrrr, I'm still not tired... nothing is going to work!" You'll just be setting yourself up for hours more of not being able to sleep. Just think, "Well, I'm still not tired, but it feels good to lay here... it is comfortable... I am comfortable." If you're still not drowsy, think about something that you don't have to think "hard" about... hazy, lazy thoughts of something good. A slow-drifting, pleasant fantasy. Don't try to think of details, this will get your brain too active. The idea is for you to be drifting. The more you lie there, the melatonin will be helping to make you drowsy, your body is completely relaxed and your mind is getting into that pre-sleep state. Let it happen and again, do not think about trying to get to sleep or not being able to sleep. This is really the most important part - the more you think about sleep, the more it delays sleep.
Honestly, you should be asleep by now. If not, give it time. If you need to get up, get up, but don't be active. Do lazy things like watching tv, etc. Having insomnia takes patience. I have struggled with it for years and so have other members of my family.
Best wishes to you... sleep WILL happen, I promise.

take nyquil.

go to the doctor. you will start hallucinating, get someone to drive you. that is scary. you need to be WATCHED on a sleep aid. let them administer and watch over you. go to the doctor please.

I would seriously consider at this point to take a sleeping pill... dont get too comfortable with it but you should take one or two and set an appointment with a doctor to evaluate further options!

good luck!

see you doctor

get help , see a doctor . do not use over the counter sleeping pills , its addictive.

barley tea or warm milk before bed helps.

Stop using your cell phone and cordless phone.

Wireless technology has been linked to sleep disruption and all sorts of things, including allergies, disturbances in the blood-brain barrier, even cancer. I have some pretty severe electrosensitivities myself thanks to a nearby cell phone mast and power lines.
