For an abdominal ultrasound, you are asked to fast prior to your study. For morning appointments, we ask our patients to be NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight.

Eating and drinking creates abdominal gas in your intestines. Ultrasound cannot see through gas, so we try to limit the amount of gas in your belly. Also, when you eat, your gallbladder contracts and releases bile, which helps break down your food. If your gallbladder is contracted, it is not seen well with ultrasound, so we could miss gallstones.

Call the facility where you are scheduled and ask for their instructions. You would hate to show up for you appointment ill-prepared. That might cause your appointment to be rescheduled.

Unless when the ultrasound was booked you were told not to eat then it is Ok to do so.
Ultrasounds do not USUALLY require you to fast.

But if you still are not too sure then ring where the ultrasound will take place and ask if fasting is required.

my dad got an ultrasound a few weeks ago to check for gaul stones or whatever they are called.

He wasnt alloud to eat and drink.
