Refusal of Medical Care in the United States?!

Question: If an individual refuses medical care, does competency or lack of information come into play?

Mainly I'm trying to find any laws in regards to refusal of medical care in the United States. A .gov link that could lead me to a more informed answer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

The only people not allowed to refuse care are those that are mentally ill. A doctor can deem them unable to make those decisions and a judge will appoint someone else to make medical decisions for them. Otherwise, if you are an adult, you may refuse care. Even teenagers in some cases have been allowed to refuse further treatment for diseases like cancer, when their parents want the treatment to continue. It depends on the situation and the judge you get.
