Mick, if it's truly an "abscess," then you MUST have it surgically drained otherwise it can be catastrophic. 375 cc of whiskey will knock you out, if you're not tolerant to it, but you'll wake up feeling foul in about 3 hours and the abscess will hurt like hell.
ibuprofen is good or codine - nice and strong but won't give you a headache in the morning :)

neurofen plus is good but you really need to go either to the dentist or hospital.

i did that when i had an abcess it worked for me but mainly cos i was concentrating on throwing up then fell asleep!
But it was better than the pain, i saw the denist next day and they prescribed strong painkillers.
if you have an abscess then you need a dentist right away...but in the meantime try holding hot...salty water in your mouth right on the site of the abscess...as hot as you can without burning yourself and as salty as you can stand without puking...this will draw out and kill the infection...sort of like a natural antibiotic...also for the pain the only way to go is take 4...yes 4 Advil's...this works better than aspirin or Tylenol...and 4 is the maximum dosage you can safely take...do not drink alcohol as this actually impedes the healing process..also if you are a smoker...stop this hurts the infection site too...good luck and get to a dentist...an abscess can turn really bad really fast
okay i've been there and just recently had the tooth pulled. dont just drink the whiskey. soak a cotton ball or paper towel small enough to fit nicely on your gum line with the whisky. hope its not a really sweet kind though that might irritate the cavity. any hard liquior will work though. try to get a little shot bottle of your favrite kind so you dont gag when the stuff drips. the whiskey or whatever will cause a numbing effect. plus get to dentist asap since an abcess can cause a bigger infection in the long run. worst case... brain infection.
Dentist or Dental dept at local hospital. will give you antibiotics. followed by treatment. Oil of cloves does help a lot. But it wont go away for ever. Get it sorted out.
