I had bunion surgery in early December 2007 and I am glad I did. I have had bunions since I was teenager which I inherited from my father and grandmother who had terrible feet and problems walking in later life.

I was experiencing pain everyday and finding it almost impossible get shoes that would fit, so I decided to get my feet fixed now rather that let my feet and mobility decline further.

I didn't experience much pain, but there is certainly a lot of inconvenience with foot surgery.

After surgery my feet were in partial casts and bandages for six weeks. The day after surgery I was able to walk (albeit very tentatively) with "bunion booties" and crutches. The bunion booties force you to walk on the heals and sides of the feet to keep the pressure off the front of the foot.

After the first week I did not need the cruthes anymore. After six weeks the plaster casts came off. This was the most painfull part of the procedure for me as its was the first time in six weeks that I had put any sort of pressure on the front of my feet.

Its been six weeks since the plaster casts came off and I am walking very well in bare feet and soft soled shoes (Crocs have been a godsend) but my feet a still swell up and are very sensitive to tight or hard soled shoes and rough ground. The surgeon said it would take six month after surgery for the feet to return to normal.

As for price that will depend on your surgeon, hospital etc. locality and health insurance coverage. My out of pocket expenses were AUD$1500 for the lot - surgeon, xrays, drugs, hospital etc.

My husband had foot surgery a little over a year ago and he was in quite a bit of pain for several weeks after the surgery. Now, the price range varies from doctor to doctor and hospital to hospital so that is something that would have to be discussed with your doctor. He was on crutches for around 6 weeks before he was able to begin putting any weight on his foot, but, again, that varies from person to person and the type of surgery that you have. Good luck with your decision; my husband was in quite a bit of pain before his surgery as well and since the it healed he has not had any problems.
