My husband is having muscle spasms in his back...?!

Question: My husband pulled a muscle in his back today (just twisted wrong while picking something up - about 5lbs, not heavy!)
That happened this afternoon around 1pm, he then went to bed (he works graveyard/ 3rd shift). He got up for dinner around 7, and between 7 and about 8:30 he had 3 seemingly bad muscle spasms in has back... bad enough that they took him down to the floor...
He's in bed with a heating pad on his back now...
What else can he or I do to help with his pain? should he be alternating heat and ice? or just stick with one or the other?
Which pain reliever is better for this? advil? aleve?
I have some 'icy hot' patches from last time I injured my back... would this be good to put on there when he gets up to go to work later?
I need advice! Please help!

heat and some tylenol. Ice decreases blood flow to the area so that is a no no, no matter who tells you to do it. He will get better with time. Pulling a muscle in your back is not a big deal usually, it heals pretty fast because of the good blood flow back there.

I'm having same spasms. Heat is good..try the thermal wraps that last for 8 hours (they really last that long). Aleve is good but he should see his doctor and get a short term perscription for Vicodin.

When he is able, so back stretches will help aleve some of the pain.

He shouldn't lift heavy stuff..I was given a 5 pound weight restriction (another reason to visit Dr. to get this restriction for work).

Good luck..I feel his pain..sorry for the pun.

It's recommended that if JUST RECENTLY pulled his muscle, put ice on to slow down nerve conduction velocity, increasing his pain tolerance, and decreasing the amount of pain. If there is a lot of swelling there already, stop with the heat. Heat will cause vasodilation and increase blood pool in that area. You don't want that as it will impede the healing process. Heat is for later when his pain is tolerable. As for meds, take your regular NSAIDS. I like Ibuprofen. But any others would work fine.

Um im 14 and this same thing happened to my step dad..

Hes currently in the hospital right now due to a serious infection that almost killed him. He is still living and kicking it. But this is very serious.

We thought it was musle spasms and back pain. Which caused him NO boul movments or he couldnt go to the bathroom.
His colen got infected and erupted into his body, affecting his brain with abbsesses filled with puss, his butt and his back.
Please make sure that he gets to a doctor before its too late. We waited over 3 months and he turned out like this.
