Why do people suggest putting ice on burns?!

Question: In my experience putting ice on a burn is detrimental and does the same or worse damage than the burn itself.

You are usually supposed to run a minor burn under water, because water has a huge capacity to absorb heat.

I am just wondering, of people who still suggest putting ice on burns, does it actually really help you or do you just say it?

depending on if its a full thickness, partial thickness, or superficial and the amount of the body that is burned i would strongly advise against putting ice on the burn, the skin plays a large part in controlling body temperature, so if the body has more that 8% burned ice could send the body into hypothermia, faster than it being just open to room temperature, i would recommend wrapping gauze soaked in sterile water around the burn and not use any ice, the use could have devastating affects, if you are still feeling pain it obviously isn't a full thickness(3rd degree), plus your going to be getting a sympathetic response to shock which is sometimes irreversible if it is caught to late. so ice is actually not good sterile water is the best thing to use and keep it covered with a damp bandage

it takes the haet out but you arent supposed to put it directly on it

Ice reduces swelling. Swelling is bad. So, ice is good.

Ice isn't bad, as like running water, it arrests the cooking by removing a lot of heat. However, ice will hold a layer of water against the skin, and that may cause some problems, but I haven't had any.

I've moved to just running it under water, not because it may be better, but the sink is a lot closer than the freezer.

you can try to cool it with hand cream it works for me i work in a kitchen andi get burned alot and that it what i do and alot of the times I use toothpaste and it works alot better too, you should not cover them with bandage let the air that it to heal

You are correct in saying ice can be detrimental to the burnt area.

While ice on a burn may halt the burning process, the danger of applying ice can send someone into shock more quickly, but it can also do irreparable damage to the underlying tissue, possibly even causing ice burn/frost bite.

Any oily substances holds the heat in and delay the healing process, other silly things I have heard of are tomato paste and tooth paste, sure they may help cool the burn quickly they coat the burnt area making it very difficult for emergency services to examine the depth of the burn, especially if 2nd & 3rd degree.

Burns management
1st & 2nd degree burns must be treated with cool running water, if water is in short supply, then water in a bowl/dish with a few ice cubes added, but not in direct contact. And cover burnt area with non-stick dressing, with out any pressure, and have the burnt area assessed by a doctor if unsure of the severity.

3rd degree gently wrap the burnt area in wet towels, or sheeting, and seek medical attention immediately. Monitor the person for signs of shock and breathing difficulty etc.

Cold is good. Cold water is good. An ice bag wrapped in a towel probably would be OK. Extreme cold is not.

Protection from open air is good which is why butter or a salve relieves the pain. There are lots of good ointments with topical painrelievers in them such as lidocaine or benzecaine.
