I had ohysical therapy for this and it helped a lot. They have great treatments, and they made thumb splints for me to let them rest. I was better within a week. Sounds like you also need cortisone shots as someone else suggests. See your doctor and get a referral to a hand specialist.
Go to a chiropractor.
use your other hand.....

check out this site it lists a few ways for treatment.
just dont use your thumb to pick up things, i have tendenitis on my kness and ankles the doctors says dont use it and it will heal and eventually go away
o Splints. Splints may be used to rest the thumb and wrist.
o Anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDs). These medications can be taken by mouth or injected into that tendon compartment. They may help reduce the swelling and relieve the pain.
o Avoiding activities that cause pain and swelling. This may allow the symptoms to go away on their own.
o Corticosteroids. Injection of corticosteroids into the tendon sheath may help reduce swelling and pain
You should go see an orthopedic doctor.
You should get a steroid injection into the tendon sheath. Most internists can do this, but I would call around first because not all offices are set up for tendon sheath injections. An orthopedic surgeon or a rheumatologist would definitely be able to do the injection for you.
