Tips for healing shin splints?!

Question: Hey everybody,
For about 3 months straight I would jog long distances and not feel any pain, then all of a sudden I started getting the splints. They stopped for about a month, but this weekend I went on a 27-mile bike race where I had to ride in deep sand and against really strong winds, and I really pushed myself. I started noticing the pain yesterday, but when I went roller-blading today is when they hurt to the point of splitting.
I would like some remedies for healing shin splints. I've kind of gotten the drift they won't heal forever, but I need them to be fully healed by next month. I'm doing a 26-mile hike through deep sand, and am planning on jogging some parts, so they have to be strong at that point. If you think I shouldn't run for the time being (I run about 6 miles a day), what are some other low-impact activities I can do? Activities that are available to me a biking, blading, and horse-riding.
Thanks everyone! (I have one more question, I've run out of space.)

It doesn't mean you will get arthritis. It means you need to get shoes for each activity that are for your foot/running type. I used to get shin splints and stress fractures, and finally, I got fitted for shoes, I got some Power Step brand shoe inserts (recommended by my sports doc), and went to see a physical therapist who showed me some GREAT stretches that I still do twice a day. Any time I have leg pain, I ice and stretch, and it gets better.
There are special stretches you can do...I wish I could explain them here, but if you can see a physical therapist, you should.

Just wait. It will heal and then you can get back to your normal activities but wrap so you wont move it!
