Painful knee?!

Question: For the past few months I've had an aching knee which seems to click all the time when I bend it. Recently though it's been more painful when I walk and today it swelled up and hurt very much. I've got a knee support on and plan to go to the doctors soon but I was wondering if anyone knew what was causing it?

I've had FIVE knee surgeries on the SAME knee..I KNOW your pain! I've had 4 'scopes, 1 lateral release, Synvisc shots, 1 Unispacer and last year the removal of the Unispacer and an Oxford partial knee. This all began when I was 33 years old. I just turned 49.
Your symptoms can be a number of things, but I'm guessing arthritis (pain and swelling)...the clicking can be meniscal tears, or any number of things depending on where in the knee the clicking is coming from, can you stoop down and get up easily? Are stairs (up and/or down) painful?..good that you are going to see a Dr...
If you do end up having to have a 'scope (arthroscopy) you rarely have sutures (or staples) and recovery is fairly quick.
My right knee is now doing the same thing my left was doing...and I'd go through a 'scope tomorrow if I had to...(now, knee replacement...probably not! But 'scope..sure)....
Good luck!

It could be signs and symptoms of arthritis or an infection. id contact your GP (doctor) and he wil probly prescribe you with anti inflamitories

Take that knee support off right now! They push your kneecap against the joint and may well make your knee worse. Instead, put a bag of frozen peas or similar, wrapped in a tea towel on it. Leave it on for 15mins AND NO LONGER. Lie on the sofa, with your leg up, knee higher than your heart. That will help to relieve the swelling. You can use the peas on it every hour. You can take some ibruprofen, like nurofen, to help with the pain and any inflammation if you like.
If you can afford it, go and see a physiotherapist rather than your doctor. They know much much more about knees than doctors.
Don't worry too much, I've had an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction after I managed to dislocate my knee (and the rest!!!) and all sorts of minor manglings over the years, but what you are describing could be all sorts of relatively minor things. Just get it checked out or you could land up with arthritis when you get older.
