Could one mug of strong coffee keep me awake until the early hours?!

Question: I have noticed recently that on a couple of nights a week I have a real problem getting to sleep - always the same 2 nights. I cut caffeine completely out of my diet a couple of years ago but on those 2 evenings I visit the same person each week and they always make me a mug of coffee at about 5pm (quite a strong one) and because I do not want to be impolite I drink it. Bearing in mind that it is the only caffeine that I have in any week is that enough to be keeping me awake?

The caffiene in coffee can stay in your system for up to six hours so can keep you awake at night, also on those nights that you have a coffee at your friends you are probably thinking about all that caffiene your drinking and convincing yourself that you wont get a sleep that night which wont help.

I had the same problem so I bought a jar of de-caff coffee and explained things to my pal and asked her to keep that jar in her house for when I came over, she was cool with it!! I'm sure your friend wouldn't feel offended if you did the same unless she has a sinister plan to deprive you of sleep and control your mind!

Yes, espcailly if you haven't eaten and just drink coffee.

For some people, it can.

If you don't have any other caffeine then I suppose it is possible

when yuou drink a coffee, it gives you a buzz for about 2-5 hours depending on how much you drink in general. usually you go through a buzz and then reach the come down. when you reach this thats when you reach for the 2nd cup lol.

It depends on how strong the coffee is and your tolerance to caffeine. I for one can drink as much coffee or tea and still go to sleep. It can be rather annoying when I try to stay awake but to no avail.

ask them if they have decaff or if you can have tea instead.

If your around 30 years or older, then yes, caffeine will mess with your sleeping pattern quite severely if you are not accustomed to it. It'll raise your blood pressure, sometimes give you heart palpitations, and generally make you feel jittery.
