What's the best way to help a terribly sore neck?!

Question: My neck has been sore for days now, and I don't know what to do about it. I've had heat on it, until tonight when my pilates instructor said to not use heat and ice it instead. The ice feels good, but it still hurts like hell. What can I do to help it?

Thanks.

stay with the heat
i have just recovered from the chiro from hell a few mths ago
ice is only used for swelling, keep the heat on it , take pain relief tablets and let it rest

ummmm, yeah stress can add to it. Have you been stretching before doing the excercise??

I can't think of anything else for you to do. I always get sore shoulders because of my bed.

Get your boyfriend to give you a massage. It should be gone soon, but sore necks are a pain in the ......well you know.

Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, like Aleve as directed on the package. I've been going thru the same thing with my lower back....the heat, the ice....and the Aleve, with some stretching is helping the most.

I am always sore when I wake up, and have to take a very hot shower before I can do anything. The watter is so warm that I turn red, especially my feet. The heat seems to help a lot.

This is not the answer you want, but it is what you are going to get...

Whether it a muscle thing or a nerve thing, (two very different things) you have to MOVE it. To get rid of the pain you must take your neck to it's fullest range of motion, both sides, round and round, and cause yourself some major discomfort, before it will get better. This is not fun. truthfully, it is going to majorly hurt, and the better job you do of following this advice, the more it is going to hurt.

Two ways to make it better are to do it in the shower with warm water directed at your neck, and hanging upside-down. you must go back and forth, round and round, and when pain occurrs, push the boundary.

Sorry.

First, you need to get a message to loosen the tight muscles. Then you need to properly rest your head in a pillow that contours to your head. Another thing to help would be have your neck checked for pinched nerves and other medical problems.
