Child has blister on finger, slammed in hospital door the other day?!

Question: My child had her finger shut in a hospital door the other day and has developed a blister on her finger. I think it's the hand that got shut in the door but am not positive. She woke up w/ the blister in the middle of the night. Should we pop it or just leave it? I'm a little worried b/c there is a lot of swelling in the rest of her finger and it looks a little black and blue near the knuckle. It's the middle of the night so immediate answers would be great!

The black and blue is standard for a jammed finger.
The blister is the body healing the injury.
Don't pop it; while it is in one peice there is no chance of infection in to the area from an outside source.
Cover it with a bandaid, give her some paracetomol if she's in pain, and everyone go to bed and relax.

It will resolve itself in a couple of days.

If it pops by itself, then cover it with a sterile dressing. You can wash the area the next with warm soapy water and dry it off with a sterile dressing. The key is to prevent it from getting dirty or wet. Hope things are working out for her! Report It

  • I think that you should put some ice on it. Quickly. That should take down the swelling. after the swelling goes down, look at it to make sure it is just a blister and not sprung or broken, after that, put a hot washcloth, (not hot enough to hurt her) and it should take out some of the pain.

won't hurt to have it x-rayed to see if there's something further wrong. like a broken finger
while you're there, ask about the blister...I'd pop it

don't worry, its just a blood blister no big deal, don't need to pop it but if you do put some antibiotic ointment on it .

You should NOT pop it, you should always leave blisters. If you pop them you could introduce bacteria into your child's blood and cause a system wide infection called septicemia which can be quickly life threatening if not treated quickly, especially in children.

Have you had her hand X-rayed? You should have this done. If you have and the X-ray showed no breaks then this swelling is probably just soft tissue swelling and damage (quite common with kids who trap their fingers).

I'd still recommend you to take her to the doctors as your kids health is not to be trifled with-- they're precious!

Can she move her finger on her own, even a little bit? If so, I'd leave it till morning and go the the doctors then, but do put ice (wrapped in a face-cloth) on it (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off). If she can't move it at all, then take her now.

    Hope this helps

Do NOT pop it!! The fluid in a blister is the bodies way of forming a protection. The fluid helps cushion the injury, and also helps in cooling, (as in blisters from touching something hot). Ice is the best answer, as it will help take down any swelling. Be careful not to give the finger frost-bite. However, the bruising could indicate a more serious injury, like a possible busted bone, or joint. Get her to a doctor, and have the finger x-rayed to find out the amount of damage. Then follow their directions. Ice it for tonight, and try to have the child not use the finger until you know more.
