What could cause my heels to hurt when I lay down at night?!

Question: My feet don't bother me throughout the day, but recently they started feeling irritated when I lay down at night. To the point that I can't even sleep on my back anymore! Any idea what could be the cause?

Do you stand on your feet a lot during the day? Are you overweight? Are you a diabetic?
It sounds as though you're having one of 2 things...some nerve irritation and possibly neuropathy, maybe because of too much pressure on your heels during the day. You can try inserting some of those Dr Scholl's gel heel pads in your shoes and see if you notice a difference. They great for relieving some of the pressure on your heels.

You could possibly have poor circulation to your legs/feet, so when you elevate them, the tissue burns/hurts from that lack of circulation.
You could try taking something like ibuprofen an hour before bedtime and see if that helps. You could also try massaging your feet and heels with some lotion before going to bed.

If you continue to have the problem, you should go see your doc and have it checked out. That type of pain may be a symptom of a disease process.

you may need a new pair of shoes. mine do that if I'm barefoot for a long time or with some shoes, i just have to keep trying different ones.

Bone spurs in your feet. This actually very common. They can cause shooting pains through your feet and ankles. Normally with bone spurs you would have alot of pain after resting and then trying to walk, it feels like your walking on broken glass. There are injections that can ease the pain. If it is bone spurs everyone (3 people) I know has gone through the extremely painful injections and still ended up having surgery to remove the spurs so I would suggest skip the injections and just get them removed, but I am not a doctor. Good luck to you.
