Have you experienced significant hearing loss? Can you explain what it was like !

Question: I have my first audiology appointment on the 4th and I'm nervous about hearing what I've already known all along. The nature of my job required that I use headphones, so I know it's becaue of that, and I will get compensated accordingly, but I wonder if my hearing loss will only get worse, or if it will stay at what it is. What kind of hearing aid did you use? Any suggestions for the future? (I don't listen to loud music, in fact, I prefer silence =)

I haven't had hearing loss, but I was born with 30% hearing. When I was in first grade (I'm 16 by the way) I had my first surgery on my ears. I had tubes put in my ear drums to help my hearing. It was crazy. I came home and I heard the wshing machine for the first time. I was scared. My parents say that I told them to stop screaming at me, and I was crying cuz I thought they were yelling at me. They weren't though. I just never heard anyone talk at normal levels. I had to have that surgery a few more times as well as getting my tonsils removed. My hearing is better now, but I continue to have ear isses. I.e. ear sensitivity, pressure, wax buld up, earaches, ect. So I understand what your going through. I never had to use an aid. The audiology appointment is kind of interesting actually. They put you in a booth with headphone type things and do a serious of beeps and you press a button when you hear the beep. The beeps will goo from loud to soft to medium and so on. Then she will say words while changing the volume of her voice at the same time. You will be asked to repeat those words. I believe they also play around with how you respond to different pitches as well. It takes 30-45 mins. I hope I helped to put you at ease. Just do what they say cuz they helped me gain some of my hearing back. Good luck.

I lost the hearing in my left ear. The effect is that you lose the stereophonic element, you can no longer pin point where a sound comes from. It's murder if you have a rattle on the car because you can't discern where it comes from. If a telephone rings on the tele I pick up my handset and say, Hello. My son thinks it's hilarious.

Ive been hearing impaired since birth, my mum had CMV and passed it to the unborn child = me, i was born with full hearing in my left ear but nothing in the right.

So i dont know the difference, but id rather be deaf than blind for sure (which i couldve been or deformed etc..) so im greatful.

Dont stress, theres plenty of options for hearing impaired and deafness.

I cant tell you what hearing aid will suit you because it depends on exactly how much hearing you have and what your most comfortable with.

Mine is the behind the ear aid, only have one since the right is nothing.

I got it coloured pink too (looks really cool)
You can get it different colours and styles etc.. so it can be funky too :)

What type of hearing loss is it? explain in more detail.

It depends on what happened to know if it will get worse.

For me, as years go on my hearing does get worse, every 10 yrs it goes down some, when i was 9 i needed 2 operations to save the hearing i had because i was losing it and quick, and last year i was having problems again and i needed steroids to bring it back a bit it worked but its only a matter of time again.

If you have gone deaf out of nowhere its more likely to go down again out of nowhere.

You need to find out as much as possible about this to save the hearing you have now :)

Good Luck.
