Can I have entries redacted/ struck from my medical record?!

Question: I have some unqualified opinions in my medical records by a specialist who wanted to pidgeonhole me. When he quit and left, the next specialist read his notes and adopted the same opinion before I ever discused the subject matter with him. Can I have these removed so future Drs won't get the same notes?

HIPPA states that YOUR medical records belong to YOU, so you do have rights regarding this.

You can correct mistakes, etc by adding what is called an 'addendum' to your record. IT will not 'remove' anything but correct issues you, as a patient, see in the record and it something YOU place in there. Unfortunately, once your medical record is created, it takes on a life of it's own. The only way would be to start seeing a different physician and not release information to any other doctor, etc.

You have the right to add to your medical record what is called Ammendments. You need to discuss doing that with that specialist. You have the right to see your medical record and the contents - and you have the right to add an ammendment. The ammendment, does not remove those comments, it gives your side of the story.

If you feel that stronglly you can file a compliant against that initial specialist.

You cannot remove information from you record. This is a legal document and the hospital will not let you do it.
You can add all the information that you want though. A simple letter stating what happened with this doctor will probably be sufficient.
