How long does it take for a drink to pass through your system?!

Question: Im wondering because no matter what time I stop drinking in the evening I always end up having to use the loo in the night, its very annoying when it takes a while to get off to sleep again.

It depends on whether you eat anything around the same time. If you drink anything on an empty stomach it basically goes straight through. When you eat a valve in your stomach closes to allow your stomach time to process the food, and then releases it slowly through.

I would recommend that you still start to ease off at least 2-3 hours before going to bed, and do not have any caffeine or alcohol at all at this time, preferably not at any time. They are both mild diuretics, so as well as waking you up it will also make you want to pee. Try eating something tiny not long before bed and see if that helps.

Some people are just prone to getting up in the night, or needing the loo more often. There are methods of training yourself to go less often, which essentially involve holding on for longer between visits. It's best to see a doctor or nurse for specific advice about how to do this safely.

The reason you wee so much after booze is because alcohol dehydrates you, it does that by taking the fluid out your body. It works in the same way a diuretic pill would.

It's called "Breaking the seal", whereby you go down the pub,and can drink for ages...then all of a sudden, you "break the seal"...and you're in and out of the loo every 10 minutes!

it depends on how much alcohol was in the drink but usually 2-3 hrs
