Calling in sick - First month of job?!

Question: I've been at my new job for approx. a month, and today I had to call in sick for the second day in a row. I definitely have the flu - have been throwing up, fever, and everything.
I'm just worried how bad that looks on my part.
I apologized when I called in, and stressed how sorry I was - but the state I'm in right now, I definitely could NOT have come in.
From an employer's perspective, or the public's general opinon, what is your view on my standing. Thankfully, it's Friday, so I now have the rest of the weekend to recoup' and be better for Monday, but I'm just wondering how bad this looks on me as a new employee? Thanks!

I manage people and this is unfortunate but that's all! You're ill and no decent employer wants someone in when they are genuinely poorly, spreading germs around.

At my company, you don't get paid for sick leave during probation anyway, so you may want to check that. I can't believe some people are suggesting no one should ever call in sick - what rubbish! No one is indispensible and if they're lucky enough not to get ill, they should have sympathy for those not so fortuntate. Struggling into work with flu is a sure way to make it all last much longer than staying home and resting.

Well in future, don't play sick! But it should be OK

it looks bad.

cosmic angel

Know a doctor? Get a note to cover your butt.

don't worry about it.
it's not that big of a deal.
if your sick you shouldn't go in. end of story
right? cuz then you would get everyone else sick and the business just could not go on.
i promise it will be fine. just work really hard.

I'm sure they understand that people get sick and they probably expect it. Regardless, the first month is EXTREMELY crucial as far as attendance goes, because it is basically a probation period; they are testing you out to see how faithful and reliable you are. After you recover this weekend, I would suggest maybe picking up an extra shift or going past expectations to prove yourself a little more worthy of your job. I hope all goes well for you. =]

You can't help being sick, i would get a doctors note just so they don't think you were faking. Next time go into work and throw up everywhere, that way they will be shoving you out the door to go home!

Do you have any sort of Probation period?

Because as a Supervisor myself, call offs in the first 90 days are frowned upon. And I have the right to terminate for ANY absence in that time period. I usually won't, but as soon as you are healthy, you best make it to work prompt and everyday from now on for awhile.

Everyone gets sick. If you're really worried you can get a sicknote from the doctor to show to your employer. You cant help being sick so they shouldnt discriminate against you just because you're new.

I don't think it looks that bad...the flu and strep throat is going around a LOT right now. It's understandable that you got it, and it's not your fault...sounds like you really needed to stay home. They should thank you for not coming in and getting the other employees sick. :)

Well, since you added it on to a weekend and it is during your 90 day probation period...pretty bad. They could fire you or maybe not, depending on how much they need you and how much they like you.

having been in management for several years, I would say it depends on what you do. If you are in a company which you seem to be expendable, it really looks bad. But if you are in a company where you are considered an asset, or where talented individuals are few and far between, it is less of a concern.
Either way, I think it is worth heading to the Doc so you can at least say you were there. Also, lay low for the weekend, don't add to your worries by having a co-worker see you out and about.... even if you are doing better.

I think it is just u. you r too stressed and think that you are going to have a problem. stop thinking like that and maybe u will be fine.

Go to the doctors office!! get a Rx to get over this crud and a receipt from the doctors office as excuse for being off work. Prove that you were sick!!

From an employer's point of view this doesn't look good. Yes, I know you can't help it and yes it is better for you to be at home. But it helps to go to the doctor and get some meds to get over this stuff and to have proof you were so sick you were willing to go to the doctor's office.

First...you needn't be sorry.....if you are sick...you ARE sick...you can't help it.

I dont think I would feel bad, if i employed someone.
Dont call in a sick leave for the third time. If you do fall sick...go to office...and then come back saying "You are not well."

That way, they would know that you are genuinely sic!

If I was your employer and felt that I had hired you for all the right reasons I would certainly assume you were telling the truth and give you the benefit of the doubt. I would also make a note to myself to keep a casual eye on your attendance record going forward. If your are unlucky enough to get sick again in the near future make a point to visit your doctor and get a note certifying the seriousness of your problem.

I'd say it isn't going to help your image at your new job, but there isn't much to be done. When your sick, you're sick, and I'm sure your coworkers don't want to catch it. Hopefully you won't miss work for a long time so you can disprove any reservations they may have about your attendance. feel better.

i know you cant help but being sick and you don't want to bring it to work get a letter from the doctor and bring it in with you that would look good

I hate when people call in sick. There are entire stores devoted to over the counter medicine for things like this. It's not just your employer who has to pick up the slack when you're gone, it's your co-workers too. I'd have to be on my death bed to not go to work if I was supposed to be there. If you're well enough to hang out on your computer, you're well enough to at least try to take some medicine and go to work. As you said, you have the whole weekend to recover. If work is slow and it's apparent you're not needed anyway, you could always get permission to leave early. Leaving everyone hanging for a second day in a row is not good, especially where you're such a new employee. You're starting off on the wrong foot with your boss AND your co-workers.

to be honest theres not alot you can do being a manger who employs myslef i think the best you can do is not have another sick day for a few months even if you are dying still come in, it may sound horrible but that wayt at least your manager can see you and have a perception on just how ill you are then he may even suggest you leave for the day or if you need to call in he will know your not just telling porkies.

take care

will be fine... dont worry

I doesn't look bad if you call in and you are really sick. You could get a doctors note saying what you have and that you had to stay home for a certain amount of days. After you get the doctors note you could show it to your boss and apologize again. Make sure when you go back to work you work really hard and show up on time. Your boss won't think its bad if you called in sick.... unless you called in sick and you weren't really sick. Since you are really sick... its fine.

From an employer's perspective, I would appreciate you not coming to work with the flu. This way you do not infect the rest of the staff. Too many times people come to work sick and pass it all around. Better to stay at home, get well... your co-workers will appreciate it. Hope you feel better. Rest, have some yummy chicken noodle soup, tea and here is some sympathy to go with it. :)
