Oh, yes it does happen!!!
I do not have the percentages, but it does happen.

Two of the three children I have as well as myself have all been delivered by forceps (helped is more like it). We don't have nor did we have any brain injuries. I don't believe it can happen.

Do a little searching on google or yahoo and you'll find that they can cause injuries to newborns, but some studies show it's still safe. My opinion is that it most likely has to do with the doctor behind them than the forceps themselves. Sylvestor Stallone is the one famous case I know of where a doctor's ignorance caused injury when he misused the forceps.

I think it would be very rare. The cranium in newborn babies is made to be very adaptable to pressure, to pass through the birth canal. That's how we are able to be born. Only an inordinate amount of pressure could harm the cranium.
