USA: How does your health insurance work?!

Question: Forgive my ignorance. I am from the UK where we are fortunate, (or unfortunate depending on how you look at it), to have NHS. How does your health service work as I often see people say they can't get treated because they don't have insurance.

Wha on earth do you do if you need urgent treatment?

Your question could not be answered in one word.find useful tips here.http://health-insurance.expert-tip.info/...

If you're lucky your employer provides it or you must buy it yourself. I'm one of the lucky ones, I've got good benefits. If I need urgent treatment I go to the E.R. or set up an appt. with my doctor.

If you don't have insurance you'll end up getting huge bills, sometimes people are turned away, or wait until the health problems become so bad they cannot be ignored. Either way the tax payers foot the bill and it costs more in the end than universal single-payer healthcare would. And we don't want that, because that's socialism. :P

It's either a private group plan purchased by the employer or the person has to self-insure or buy a private (very expensive) plan. That's why it is such an issue here in the election. Employers can't afford to subsidize the insurance and employees can't afford the premiums unless they are on the upper end of the salary bracket. Many small businesses can't offer any at all and a lot of people are doing without.

That means urgent treatment can bankrupt families and a lot of people let things slide until they get so serious it is a life-threatening situation. Your NHS may not always be the best, but at least it's something.
