Prednisone? Does anyone know of a good medication to replace Prednisone?!
Question: My mom, has extreme arthritis, and is pretty much a cripple. She had been on prednisone and narcotic pain killers for about two years, but recently her Doctor said that he could not give her prednisone anymore because it would kill her. She also has Crones disease, so regular NSAIDS are bad for her too. Can anyone out there suggest anything? She is such bad pain, she can't even comb her hair anymore. It was bad while she was on the Predisone, but now she can't do anything.

Prednisone is a steroid, not a pain killer. It is given for Arthritic Flares and not long term treatment. She need to be seen by a Rheumatologist who will assess her condition, using blood tests, x-rays, physical exam and perhaps MRI. If she is over weight, prednisone tends to pile the weight on, she needs to loose it. The Rheumatologist will then star her treatment, drug treatment, then send her for PT and monitor her condition. The new biological therapies are excellent at stopping the joints degenerating. Best of Luck
