If you are talking about a nervous breakdown there is a huge difference. A breakdown is when you totally lose control and cannot help yourself. You are out of it. Need to be hospitalized and treated. It is severe depression out of control. If you have one you cannot get over it without professional help.

Crying is a normal emotion. But, if someone is crying all the time for no apparent reason they could be experiencing severe depression. Or even a nervous breakdown. It just depends on how long it has been going on and if the person is seeking help. A doctor would know the difference. But, if it seems out of control the person needs professional care
immediately. If they are having a nervous breakdown, they could if they wait too long and experience severe repercussions. It is not something to take lightly.

If you are really upset about something serious like a death then it would temporary depression which would cause excessive crying spells. A doctor normally would prescribe a sedative for something like that. Hope this helps...
